Our Heritage

A Legacy of Excellence

Founded in 1907 by Miss Olive Willis and Miss Alice Carver, Downe House began in Charles Darwin’s former home in Downe, Kent. With a vision of providing exceptional education for girls, the school quickly gained a reputation for academic excellence and character development. In 1922, to accommodate its growing community, the school relocated to Cold Ash, Berkshire, bringing entire buildings from Kent and expanding its facilities. Over the years, key additions included classrooms, science laboratories, a library opened by the Duchess of Atholl, a gym, and a swimming pool, ensuring students had access to world-class learning environments.

By its 50th anniversary, Downe House had firmly established itself as a leading institution for girls’ education. Marking this milestone, the Jubilee Hall was built, and the first Science Block was opened by Professor Dorothy Hodgkin, further strengthening the school’s academic provision. In 1991, the innovative French Project was introduced, allowing students to spend a term in Veyrines-de-Domme, France—a programme that remains a cherished and integral part of the Downe House experience.

Under the leadership of Mrs Emma McKendrick, who became Headmistress in 1997, Downe House embraced modern advancements while maintaining its strong traditions. The school’s centenary was celebrated with a series of momentous events, including a special service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, alumni reunions, academic conferences, and the commissioning of the opera Olive Triumphant. These celebrations highlighted the school’s enduring legacy and commitment to excellence.

Building on this distinguished heritage, Downe House Muscat was founded in 2022, marking a new chapter in the school’s history as the first international partner school. Bringing the ethos and values of Downe House to Oman, Downe House Muscat offers an outstanding British education tailored to empower and inspire young women in the region.
